GOLF

Dear Members, In anticipation of the upcoming holidays, I want to provide a few reminders about the practice facilities, the golf courses, and club-owned golf cart use so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable time. We receive many requests for additional golf carts for family use during the holidays. We strongly encourage members who would like additional golf carts to request them in advance. Additionally, there is a daily use fee for using a club-owned cart; please see Todd Kitchen, Director of Outside Operations, for all the details. As safety is always our top priority, only individuals with a valid driver’s license, whether privately owned or club-owned, can operate a golf cart, and as a reminder, all rules of the road must be followed. It’s always great to see all the kids and grandkids enthusiastic about golf, and we encourage them to play and practice as much as they want. However, as a friendly reminder, children under the age of 16 may only use the north end of the Driving Range, and they must be always accompanied by an adult. Furthermore, any guest using the South end of the Driving Range must be appropriately attired, which always means a collared shirt and golf shorts or slacks. Thank you to everyone participating in our Sixth annual Veteran’s Day golf event. We had 186 participants who donated $34,345, of which 100 percent of the donations will go to the West Palm Beach VA, suicide prevention program. Thank you again for your generosity. Over the past several months, the professional staff and I have worked with a new tee time platform called ForeTees. We are now at a point where we’re comfortable going live with the new system, and our target date to transition from Chelsea tee times to Foretees is December 18, 2023. We will send out additional information to members on how to make requests, how the lottery works, and how members can change a foursome or group after a tee sheet has been established. Stay tuned for more details... Lastly, several golf events will take place in December. The Ladies Eclectic Championship is on Tuesday, December 5, and Thursday, December 7. The second Nine, Wine, and Dine of the season will be on Friday, December 1. Jupiter Medical Center Day will be on Wednesday, December 13, and the Men’s President’s Cup will be on December 8 and 11. Online registration is currently open for all these, and additional details can be obtained in the golf shop if needed. We wish everyone a happy and healthy Holiday season. J.R. Congdon Director of Golf

MESSAGE FROM SECURITY

OPEN GARAGE DOORS WHEN CHARGING GOLF CARTS

Members may not realize it, but their golf carts could be a ticking time bomb if they charge them inside a garage. That is because the golf cart batteries, especially older ones, emit hydrogen, which is highly flammable. The Palm Beach County Fire Marshall said, “if it doesn’t suffocate you, it can kill you through fire.” Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel are responding to an increasing number of calls in golf-course communities for help in determining why carbon monoxide detectors are being set off. When they arrive, they find the issue is not carbon monoxide; it is hydrogen from the charging of golf carts that has set off the detectors.

The presence of hydrogen is a serious problem. When hydrogen levels reach 4 to 7 percent, hydrogen becomes extremely explosive. Security cannot stress how unsafe it is to walk away and charge a golf cart in a closed garage. Golf carts need to be charged in a well-ventilated area. With hydrogen present, a problem could develop by even touching the garage door switch or garage door light – all of which work off electricity. Golf cart batteries need to be periodically filled with distilled water because water evaporates. If water levels drop too low, hydrogen is emitted. The golf cart units before 2018 do not have safety mechanisms that shut off the charging if the water levels are too low. Hydrogen is very light and can leak into a home through cracks, crevices, and air vents. Once that happens, hydrogen gas can find an open flame, or even static electricity, setting off an explosion. If your carbon monoxide detector is set off, open your garage door manually. We recommend that all our members, have a carbon monoxide detector in your garage/cart storage area, not only to possibly detect excessive battery charging emissions, but also to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning, in case a vehicle is left running inside the garage. DO NOT CHARGE GOLF CARTS IN A CLOSED DOOR ENVIRONMENT.

The Homefront column is designed to inform our members where in the community our new residents are living and other residences they may have. It also keeps up with our present members who have stayed in the community but moved to new dwellings. Of course we always wish our members who are moving out of the community good luck wherever their travels take them and our new members and established members good luck in their new address.

Tuesday, October 31 was more than just Halloween. It was Frenchman ’ s Creek Ladies Golf Association opening day – and was definitely a treat, not a trick. It was a treat in so many ways from the very start. The weather was wonderful – just a beautiful day. The participation was great -- even though not all members were back for the season – with 147 women playing in the nine hole step aside scramble format. Each team was composed of ABC and D players, and one drive was required of each player. The teams were divided into four flights, one on each nine. The winning teams in each flight are listed below. Following golf was a super buffet luncheon at the Pavilion - which looked lovely - with many delicious choices. The food and beverage staff did a wonderful job and deserves many thanks. Everyone received opening day gifts of a golf glove and a Halloween themed ball marker. Many thanks go to co - chairs Robin Rosenblatt and Wendy Weinstein who did a super job in providing us with an awesome day and great way to start the season.

By MIMI BERGEL The first Nine, Wine, and Dine of the season was definitely a great success. It was held on Friday afternoon, October 27, in just beautiful weather. The format was a step - aside scramble, and the participation was wonderful, with 40 teams more than covering all four of the nine hole divisions. Following golf was the wine and dine part of the day – -- a lovely dinner at the Pavilion, which included enjoyable entertainment by a D.J. and was a delightful finish to a delightful day. Thanks to Martina and the wonderful food and beverage staff for all the arrangements. Thanks also to co - chairs Sandi Hoffman and Wendy Grabler who did a great job of planning such a successful golf event.
