On September 1, 2004, Hurricane Frances was
on its way to Palm Beach gardens and at Frenchman ’ s Creek, we were moving our pets and bedding into the clubhouse to await this massive category 4 storm with winds up to 145 MPH. For most of us there was no privacy, but for WENDY and DICK ADLER ’ S family, there was a private office because they were bringing In a less than one day old baby boy grandson and his family. Now skip forward 17 years to The October, 2021 issue of Palm Beach Illustrated and meet 17 year old JAKE ZUR. It ’ s been about a year since Jake was
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Mixing technology with his diagnosis was a no brainer for Jake, who plans to major in computer science in college and has spent his summer as a programming data analysis intern at Jupiter ’ s Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience. Unfortunately, a breakfast doughnut was no longer a treat but something to manage his sugars. Spreadsheets and documentation of all he would eat took way too long, so the senior at Benjamin School decided to build his own app which he calls “ SWEETSPOT: THE DIABETES MANAGER. ” It is available free on the Apple App Store and offers 3 functions: a carb calculator, a glucose log and a meal planner. Jake hopes that others will be empowered to manage their blood sugars and that the app will help them find their own Sweetspot.
BETH ELGORT has spent her adult life advocating for others as a social worker, educator and nutrition expert. She is now the founder of the non - profit MIND, MUSIC AND MOVEMENT FOUNDATION for NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS– which she originally created to help her husband, 76 year old STEVE, who was diagnosed 15 years ago with Parkinson ’ s Disease. Her dream was to create a center that is a nurturing, safe environment where people can socialize and feel comfortable taking classes to improve their neuro - plasticity and movement. For someone with a neurologi- cal disorder , a holistic approach is needed– one that
combines diet, lifestyle, and supportive therapies including physical and speech therapy. Whether it is Alzheimer ’ s dementia or Parkinson ’ s disease, research shows that singing helps improve voice strength and the act of breathing as well as diction and memory, says Beth. The Foundation also offers dance, yoga, boxing, art and nutrition among others.
