GOLF

Dear Members, Hopefully everyone is off to a great start to the summer, and that the weather is pleasant and cool, wherever you may be. The golf staff along with the Golf and Green’s Committee is busy planning the activities for next season, and we are currently working on the final version of the golf calendar. Our goal this season is to continue to decompress the schedule, so there are not multiple events within a short period of time. We also will start tournament activity in late October and run the schedule through late April. We have also done our best to not have events on Saturday morning, not withstanding a couple of exceptions. Be on the lookout for the complete schedule within the next few weeks. On another note, we are in the height of the South Florida thunderstorm and lightning season. The ThorGuard lightening prediction system is fully function. One long blast of the horn, means that lightening is nearby, and anyone outside should immediately seek shelter. For those of you playing golf, it is required, that you cease playing and seek shelter. There are also flashing strobe lights located throughout the property, just in case you didn’t hear the horn. If the strobe light is flashing yellow, it means that lightening is in the area, and you should seek shelter. ThorGuard also has a mobile app that members can download to their cell phones to receive up to date weather information for the area. Contact the Golf Shop at (561) 622-1620 and the team will walk you through the download and use of the app. The North Course is currently closed for summer maintenance, and it will reopen on Monday, July 24th. At that time, the South Course will close and not reopen until Monday, October 3th. During the closures, both courses will be aerified, verticut, fairways, tees and greens top-dressed, certain areas treated for mole crickets and a wall to wall weed control application. All these various processes are necessary to create optimal playing conditions for the upcoming season. As a reminder, the Fourth of July is merely a month away. For the holiday, there will be an Independence Day Couples event on Wednesday, July 4th at 9am and a Summer Sunset (Nine Hole) Golf event on Sunday, July 7th.

NORTH COURSE CLOSURE PLANS & SUMMER UPDATE

Greetings from the Golf Maintenance Department! After a difficult winter with many challenges, the courses have both regained their vigor and are performing nicely. As the temperatures heat up and the demand for golf slows down, the workload in golf course maintenance picks up. The turf is now growing at over 90% of its peak growth potential and will require our full efforts to keep up with maintenance. This is also the period where we perform our aggressive summer cultural practices.

On Monday, May 20, the North Course will close and will reopen on Monday, July 29. We aim to accomplish a great deal during this closure. We will be aggressively vertical mowing and aerating all surfaces. This helps reduce thatch build up, promote new growth, and healthier turf. There will be multiple rounds of these practices that occur followed by heavy sand applications to further dilute organic matter and promote firmer, healthier playing surfaces. In total, we will create over a quarter billion holes, remove over 200 cubic yards of organic material, and apply 1000 tons of sand on the North Course! Additionally, there will be selective weed control, sodding, and a healthy amount of bunker sand adjustments.

One project that will happen is the removal of the greens liners from the low points of each green (pictured). These hard plastic liners are installed during construction. However, if not properly drained, they will trap water below the green’s surface and lead to poor plant health. We can expect better turf health and performance in these areas after the project is finished. Another project is selective repairs on bridges to shore up weak areas and repair any damaged decking. Our goal will be to accomplish the bulk of the practices in the first seven weeks of the closure. The final three weeks will be for healing the turf and working on details in preparation for re-opening the course on July 29, 2024. Additionally, we will be aerifying the back tee on the South end of the range and the North tee during the first closure. While the North Course is closed, the South Course will accommodate

our daily play. There will be minor practices that will be on-going through the summer, but we will leave major tasks for the closure period. On-going practices that will occur are selective applications of organic fertilizers and compost to traffic areas and weak areas in fairways. This will encourage better soil and, in turn, turf health now and into the future. We have begun to perform this practice in areas (pictured). There will be a focus on selective weed control and general maintenance on the South Course leading into its closure period beginning in July. 14 Frenchman’s Creek

One area of concern on the South Course that has been previously addressed, is the fluid leak on two, four, and six South greens. With an aging equipment fleet, leaks are a possibility, but this should not have made it past one green. We have been working to remove and repair select areas. Given the strong growing conditions we are experiencing, we can expect that these areas will no longer be noticeable in a short amount of time. In the interim, we will do our best to limit any playability disruption. We are appreciative of the club’s commitment to improve this situation through an investment in updated equipment. This equipment, which is expected to arrive in early 2025, will be driven by electric reel motors as opposed to hydraulic reels. This will drastically reduce the number of potential points of failure and potential leaks.

For those that we have the pleasure of seeing throughout the summer, we look forward to presenting the best possible playing conditions on the South and a fruitful closure on the North. For those that will be spending the summer outside of Florida, we wish you the safest of travels and a wonderful summer. We look forward to a productive summer that will lay the groundwork for a great golf season in 2024 and 2025. Thank you, William Schmit Director of Agrononomy

MESSAGE FROM SECURITY

FRENCHMAN’S CREEK HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

HURRICANE KITS

As we approach the summer months, let’s make sure we do not forget about the upcoming hurricane season (June 1st – Nove 1st). It is important to create a kit of supplies that you can take with you if you are forced to evacuate. This kit will also be useful if you are able to stay in your home, but are still affected by the storm, such as through the loss of power. One common trend seen when hurricanes are approaching is widespread panic. When this happens, people rush in large numbers to get all the supplies they think they need. However, if you prepare your kit ahead of time, you can alleviate a lot of the potential stress of a very chaotic situation. You should create your kit in a bag that you can easily take with you. Some recommended items to include are: • Non-perishable food (enough to last at least 3 days) • Water (enough to last at least 3 days) • First-aid kit (include any prescription medication you may need)

• Personal hygiene items and sanitation items • Flashlights (have extra batteries on hand) • Battery operated radio (again, have extra batteries) • Waterproof container with cash and important documents • Manual can opener • Lighter or matches • Books, magazines, games for recreation • Special needs items: pet supplies and baby supplies if applicable • Cooler and ice packs • A plan for evacuation and for if family members are separated

Please contact me directly if you have any questions or would like further information. Josue Encarnacion, PMP Director of Security, Frenchman’s Creek Beach and Country Club Know how to secure your home in the event of damaging winds, storm surge and flooding: SECURING YOUR HOME • Cover all your windows, either with hurricane shutters or wood • Although tape can prevent glass from shattering everywhere, be warned that tape does not prevent the window from breaking • If possible, secure straps or clips to securely fasten your roof to the structure of your home • Make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed and clear rain gutters. • Reinforce your garage doors • Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and anything else that is not tied down • If winds become strong, stay away from windows and doors and close, secure and brace internal doors
