JUNE FC LIFE

JUNE 2021 edition

CAREY PACK had his Hole-In-One on Friday, May 28, 2021. It was on Number 9 of the South course and played at 151 yards.

The Homefront column is designed to inform our members where in the community our new residents are living and other residences they may have. It also keeps up with our present members who have stayed in the community but moved to new dwellings. Of course we always wish our members who are moving out of the community good luck wherever their travels take them and our new members and established members good luck in their new address.

This month we welcome DEBORAH and ROGER LEBBIN. They purchased Catherine and Leon Pollack’s home on Le Bateau Lane. They also have a residence in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Roger has a golf handicap of 14- 15. We wish them many happy days and years at the Creek.

Frenchman’s Creek Excursion to “ BEYOND VAN GOGH”

By Norma Lippman

I often think that living at Frenchman’s Creek is similar to living on a cruise ship, only better. We have the food, the ocean, the spa, the sports and games, plus the comforts of home. We even have excursions.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit Miami to view a version of the 'Immersive Van Gogh' experience. Our Frenchman’s group traveled to the Ice Palace in Miami in air - conditioned comfort , while eating our delicious, individually pre-ordered box lunches , and being expertly driven by

Robert Lafontant. Also with us was Jessica Manrique from marketing. The exhibition has already been presented in NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto and Paris with plans to visit more than a dozen more major cities. In NYC, the space used was 70,000 square feet. In the other cities, the spaces are smaller and different , so the show is adapted to suit. But the heart of the show is the same—“a 38 minute digital film projected across the huge space that dynamically and elegantly weaves images from Van Gogh’s paintings on the walls and floor to a soundtrack of gentle electronic music and ethereal piano.” I sat on the floor in my black Nike pants and kept turning as if on a turntable. Some people brought stools or just walked and turned. In addition to the digital film, there is an appetizer prequel of panels with excerpts from letters sent by Vincent to his brother, Theo. We found the information in them helpful in understanding the artist’s frame of mind. We all agreed it was a really good day! I’m kind of tired of the word ‘awesome’, but, for me, it was.

KRISTEN WERTENBERGER IS SO EXCITED THAT ONE OF HER PUPILS WON A COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Syosset captures Nassau titles in team competition

Syosset's SPENCER KESCHNER , grandson of LINDA and ROBERT FRIEDMAN , and his doubles partner Dylan Apfel helped clinch the Nassau County team championship on Thursday when they rallied back after losing the first set. Syosset edged Roslyn, 4-3, to capture the Nassau County team championship at Eisenhower Park on Thursday. The match between the two rivals came down to third doubles, which went to a decisive third set. Sophomore Dylan Apfel and freshman Spencer Keschner dropped the first set, 4-6, but rallied to take the next two, 6-4, 6 -4, to clinch the title for Syosset. "We didn’t want to think about it too much… but we had an idea," Keschner said of the match coming down to his court. "We were aware of the surroundings and people coming off the courts around us," Apfel added, "so we knew we needed to win that match." The victory gives Syosset its fifth Nassau title in the past six seasons. The Syosset girls team also captured the Nassau title this season. Syosset will face the Suffolk County team champion on June 18, for the Long Island championship.

From Kristen: congratulations to Spencer his team won the Boys tennis Title.

From Car i na Bayer , our new Catering and Event Manager.

Cindy Teyssedou , our Beach Club Manager, shared these pictures with me. They were taken by one of her team members that came in the wee hours of the morning to the Beach Club in hopes of seeing a turtle lay her eggs.

We had planned to do some Olympic Events at the Beach Club , but were cancellled due to nesting season. There are 5 nests at the Beach Club . The Beach Club wanted to participate in the Frenchman’s Creek Olympics and were excited to do so but can’t - due to turtle conservation.

On June 9, the Frenchman’s Creek Charities Foundation, led by ML Cocci, hosted a very special event which exemplified the synergy between two of our grant ees. Furry Friends' "Shelter-to-Service Dogs Program" trains chosen shelter dogs to assist veterans with a host of physical and emotional issues. Pat Deshong is its president. The Wounded Veterans Relie f Fund provides emergency financial support to qualified disabled veterans in Florida. Mike Durkee is the executive director. Durkee works with the VA Hospital and asked Deshong if someone could visit the VA with a service dog. As a result, veteran Steven Pohler and his dog, Hero, became daily visitors to the hospital where they provide emotional support. Alanna Leon, US Navy Senior Veterans Case Manager, brought her service dog, Ares. Furrry Friends' trainer, Jonathan Dingman, brought a puppy, Dewey, one of three puppies scheduled to be trained as service dogs under the Hero program. Leon and Pohler spoke movingly about the positive effect these dogs have had on their emotional well - being. In addition to Deshong and Durkee, other guests included Curry Krasulak, Furry Friends' Development Director, our members, Marie Adler Kravecas and Patti Raber Max, next year's Charities Foundation co-chairs, Marilyn Greenberg, an active Furry Friends volunteer, Norma Lippman, Rho Edelman and Rhoda Steiner . The event concluded with breakfast at the Sports Bar.
