Hurricane Preparedness Tips
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
TROPICAL STORM WATCH means tropical storm conditions
(sustained winds of 39-73 mph) are possible in a specified area
within 48 hours.
TROPICAL STORM WARNING means tropical storm conditions
(sustained winds of 39-73 mph) are expected in a specified area
within 36 hours.
HURRICANE WATCH means hurricane conditions (sustained winds
of 74 mph or higher) are possible within a specified area within 48
hours of a tropical storm warning. Prepare your home and review
your plan while listening closely to instructions from local offi
cials.
HURRICANE WARNING means hurricane conditions (sustained
winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected within the specified area.
Since hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once
winds reach tropical storm force conditions, the hurricane warning
is issued within 36 hours of the anticipated onset of tropical storm
force winds to allow for important preparation.
BE PREPARED
- Two masks per person should you need to evacuate to a shelter
- Drinking Water, at least 1 gallon daily for 3-7 days
- Pet food, water, litter, training pads for 3-7 days, collar and leash
- Non-perishable, canned food and snacks for 3-7 days
- Pet medications, identification, immunization records
- Juices and food for infants or elderly
- Paper plates, utensils, plastic cups, Kleenex and paper towels
- Formula, diapers, wipes
- Battery operated weather radio
- First aid kit, medication, prescription drugs
- Unscented liquid bleach
- Glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids/ batteries
- Flashlights / Battery operated lanterns
- Two masks per person should you need to evacuate to a shelter
- Backup batteries for all items requiring a battery
