Norman Barham
Norman was the Chair of the Frenchman’s Creek Insurance Committee—”trial-by-fire” (or more accurately, “trial-by-wind”) when the hurricanes hit South Florida in 2004-2005. Working with his very able committee, he settled claims in excess of $5 million and rene- gotiated our insurance contracts. Under this chairmanship, the committee undertook a study of hurricane self-insurance to protect Frenchman’s Creek from future storms, insti- tuted self-insurance for our employee benefits program and renewed our property, casual- ty and employee benefits programs resulting in important savings for our Club. Norman remains a member of that committee to this day, lending his insurance expertise to that hard working and important committee.
Over the 22 years as a Frenchman’s Creek resident and sometimes Board member, Norman has served on many oth- er committees, including the Men’s Health Day Committee, the Marketing Committee and the Tennis and Fitness Cen- ter Committees. In his role as the Board of Governors President, this past year he has worked with the Finance Com- mittee to obtain PPP for Frenchman’s; worked with Insurance Committee Chair, Alan Fuirst on our insurance renewals and attended (live and via ZOOM) many other committee meetings. He worked with the hardworking Governance Committee as they worked on revisions to the Club Governing Documents; the Security Committee; the Medical Advi- sory Committee; and the building projects’ Oversight Committee. After a 25-year career, Norman became President of the Global Insurance brokerage firm, Johnson & Higgins. When the company merged with Marsh & McLennan, he served that firm in various capacities, including Vice Chairman of Marsh, Inc., their insurance brokerage division and as a member of the Board of Directors of Marsh & McLennan Companies, the parent company. After his retirement, Norman served for many years on the Board of Directors of Endurance Specialty Holdings, NYSE reinsurance company headquartered in Bermuda. A long-time Board Member of NYC Outward Board, Norman currently is an Advisory Board member. He served as President of the Queens College Foundation for 1 1/2 years and was for several years, a member of the Board of the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences in Loveladies, New Jersey. Norman, and his wife, Carole, have lived in Frenchman’s Creek since 2000, spending 7 1/2 months here and sum- mers at the beach in New Jersey. They have 2 children, 5 grandchildren and one very adorable great granddaughter they have yet to meet due to the coronavirus. Norman’s interests include golf, tennis, pickle ball, boating with the grandkids in NJ and sharing the good life with Frenchman’s and New Jersey friends. 1. Why did you want to become a member of the Board and what motivates you? I have been on the Board before and I enjoy the work; the Board touches all aspects of Frenchman’s Creek, a place that I love. For the past year, I have served as your Board President...the task that I signed on for is not finished and I look forward to the opportunity to complete the job. As President Lincoln said, “...best not to swap horses in mid-stream.” Frenchman’s Creek is not bricks and mortar; it is our culture, our neighbors and our amenities that make place special. The difficulties of these unpresented times, plagued by the ravages of Covid-19, political discord in our nation and here at home, and the disharmony caused by the diversity of opinions about the building project made these times different from any others. It is also true that we have more things in common than we fight about: staying safe from coronavirus, getting vaccination appointments and wanting to make a final decision about the building project, to name but a few. My vision for the future would be to stay on target to meet our stated goals; ensure that we meet our infrastructure needs; address the needs of our current members and anticipate the needs of future residents; strengthen our committees which should be the backbone of our lead- ership; and look ahead 5 years to consider who our future members will be and who our competition will be. And of course, to always be fiscally responsible in all that we do. 2. What is your vision for the future of Frenchman’s Creek, and as a member of the Board, what specific action plans would you advocate for now to execute your vision?
