SECURITY

HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE! WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HURRICANE WATCH OR WARNING? Now is the time to prepare your family and your home and plan for the Hurricane Season. Watch – A Hurricane Watch means hurricane conditions (sustained winds of at least 75 mph) are possible in the area within 48 hours. Warning – A Hurricane Warning means hurricane-force conditions (sustained winds of at least 74 mph) are expected in your area in 36 hours or less. Hurricanes and strong tropical storms can bring many hazards to Frenchman’s Creek and the surrounding area, whether they approach from the Gulf Coast, north, south or east. Each storm is different, and you must be prepared for any event whether it’s a bad thunderstorm, Tropical Storm or Hurricane. Be mindful of severe thunderstorm warnings. When a warning is issued, it means that the storms may be capable of producing damaging winds or large, destructive hail. Even if no warning is in effect, seek shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches • Prepare your family: Discuss with family members and friends what your options and plans are before a storm heads for our area. Having a plan before storm season will alleviate stress for everyone, be sure to have a plan for you, your loved ones, and your pets. • Prepare your home: Walk around the exterior of your home to make sure your yard’s trees and bushes are trimmed back, yard and patio furniture have a storage space or are safely stored, shutters are ready for installation, and loose debris is safely stored away. If you need help with these items, please call the POA Office for assistance. • Prepare your plan: In the event that a storm is heading to our area, you will need a plan. Whether you stay in your home, in a home with family or friends, or you choose to leave, please contact the POA Office and let them know what actions you will take. PREPARE NOW: Whether you hunker down for a storm or decide to flee to another location, make sure you have ample medications, health aides, smartphones, computers and chargers. Also, gather important documents such as passports, social security cards, immunization records, bank information, and other essential documents. If you decide to shelter in your own home, please make sure you have ample food, water, emergency lighting, etc., to hold you over until power is restored and it’s safe to travel in and about the community.
